Robert Blair Community School, Islington

Potter + Holmes have successfully completed a three phase alteration and refurbishment of Islington's Robert Blair Community School.

Phase 1:
New Children's Centre and ancillary community facilities created within the existing building. A critical series of detailed planning exercises and meetings suggested the best use of the limited space available.

Key benefits included:
Cohesive and seamless progression from Nursery to Primary with all classrooms having direct access to outdoor play
Significant reduction in circulation
Colonisation of additional external space to enlarge Early Years outdoor play area
New separate access and additional entrance from northern playground to encourage involvement from local families
Reuse of a redundant WC block

Phase 2:
Upgrading of existing Primary classrooms to suit current national curriculum teaching methods.

Key benefits included:
Classrooms enlarged to meet current standards
Improved class based storage and craft facilities
Classrooms twinned to provide back to back services, vertically grouped to provide the most economic and least disruptive intervention

Phase 1 & 2 were run concurrently.

Phase 3:
Provision of New staff facilities, playground alterations, repairs and play equipment.

New staff resources area for lesson preparation
Extensive repairs to playground wall
New play equipment for Children's Centre
