Potter + Holmes were appointed by Kairos Community Trust to convert a hostel building and the adjoining redundant church hall into a new reception centre and residential community. This hostel in Nunhead temporarily houses and supports homeless people who wish to recover from all types of 'substance misuse' related problems.
A glazed link connects the formerly separate buildings and a new extension.
The extended hostel provides 24 single rooms, predominantly with ensuite facilities; a mezzanine floor inserted into the church hall has become a dining room. Additionally a library, fitness room, counselling room and a chapel have been provided.
The materials for the interior were chosen with particular sensitivity to instil a sense of warmth and calm.
Fully insulated linings to the existing buildings and new double glazed windows give the centre a sustainable and economical future.
