Bemerton children centre

Through competitive interview, Potter and Holmes created the first Children’s Centre for Islington with a joint reception for Early Years and Sure Start.

Integrating services for the nursery, community care workers, management board training and crèche facilities, in this 1960’s social housing block, the new canopied entrance creates a greater presence on the street. The Children’s Centre retains the original openings but the internal curvy route provides interest with ‘window seat nooks’ for occasional quiet reading and ‘time out’. The new garden incorporates additional adjoining land and mature planting, raised beds and scented planting. Twisty paths lead to the wilder areas where ‘giant’ railway sleeper steps climb a new mound and a meandering path provides access for wheelchairs.
