Dykewood Carbon Zero House



 

The client’s desire was to meet the government’s carbon zero standards which it is targeting to achieve by 2016, whilst creating a house with a very contemporary look. This appearance was possible as the site was within an area where the planners were less strict.

The house was designed to maximise south facing roof sloping in order to heighten the effectiveness of Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic (PV) Panels and the majority of window area was kept to the south side of the house to maximise passive solar gain and reduce heat loss.

The structure used in the build was timber frame, but the thickness was increased from 150mm to 300mm in the walls, 250 to 400mm in the roof and 50 to 200mm in the floor; this space was then fully-filled with recycled newspaper insulation, and a high level of air-tightness was achieved. The house incorporates various methods of reducing non-sustainable energy consumption; heating and hot water are supplied by Solar thermal panels leading to a 1000L thermal store and a highly efficient wood-burning stove, with an electrical back-up for emergencies, and PV panels provide sustainable electricity to the house. Grey water re-use was also installed, therefore reducing its water consumption.

Further to the desire to create a sustainable, energy-efficient home, the house is designed to be fully wheelchair accessible.
