Derby Childrens Hospital
Potter + Holmes were commissioned to design the interiors and landscaping for the first new Children’s Hospital to be built in the 20th Century. A coherent and individual character was established for the whole hospital; creating a welcoming place with an emphasis on caring and warmth, accessibility, efficient operation and longevity.
A fundraising campaign ran in parallel with the design process in which Potter + Holmes encouraged the community to be involved in many aspects of the design as well as setting up an art procurement programme. Our design input included eighteen principal new settings inside the hospital as well as a new approach to the building and seven courtyards.
The variety of settings, including the ‘Ness and Nessie’ sculptures and the ‘Dolphin’ ward provide clues for the imagination, delight and curiosity of children seen as essential elements in the process of healing and care.
