Ambler Children’s Centre

Potter & Holmes Architects designed a new-build Children’s Centre and refurbished the Victorian school, adding essential preschool care and community facilities. Acting as a link between the existing school and derelict former dental building, the building exploits the site’s attributes by creating direct access to the previously unused wild garden. The older children’s play spaces are adjacent to the main school playground, encouraging gradual integration while the youngest inhabit the quieter western rooms.

The highly insulated cedar clad timber frame building has low windows, level thresholds and plenty of display space. Rooflights ensure natural light penetration and deep overhangs minimise solar gain. The heated floor is cushioned to protect vulnerable crawling knees.
